Black History Week 4: Change

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”-Rob Siltanen

Change is the only thing constant about the imperfect lives we all lead. But in some cases, the more things change, the more things stay the same.

When I researching quotes for this week’s post, this was the first one that popped up! How perfectly does this describe my generation full of thinkers and innovators? The baby boomers laid the foundation. Generation X fell victim to a system designed to break them but us…..we set the precedence, and it is up to us to move everything in a positive direction. We have seen what we can do, and that is our motivation. We need to join our peers in creating platforms.

It so funny that I laid out my blog topics more than a month ago, really not prepared for how Black Panther, the latest record-breaking blockbuster from Marvel, was going to spark a match and light a flame that will blaze a trail of greatness. What an amazing piece of art and a testament to the blurred lines between activism and comfort amongst all peoples of African descent. And next Wrinkle in Time will wow us with a tale of the power of imagination. Although subtle, sometimes change can create a ripple effect felt years later. Our work will not be in vain.

Change is scary but change can mean aiding those who have no other recourse. Change can mean taking a chance and being selfless enough to use your resources and letting down your defenses for the greater good. A movement is often called a “cause” for a reason. Find your cause and let it be your fuel for change. Don’t give up and strive for greater. YOU DESERVE IT!
